Chapter 13 – Kyle

Kyle had helped his grandmother deliver a number of babies, but he'd never brought twins into the world, and he'd never witnessed or helped with a C-section. Watching Ron now, after the interminable stitching, hold his babies in his arms, felt like his own miracle.

Kyle felt no shame as he wiped tears from his face.

"I'm going to get three of you settled into a room. We're going to need to keep an eye on these two little guys, and you need your sleep," Dr. Havisham said. The power of the moment hadn't escaped her either, and she had already surreptitiously turned her back and tapped at her eyelids with a Kleenex.

"I just want to hold them forever," Ron said. And then a note of sadness touched his voice. "I wish Chaz was here to see them."

"Have you picked names yet?"

"This little one will be Thane Michael. Thane was Chaz’s grandfather. He died when Chaz was a little boy, and I’ve always loved the name Michael." Ron said, kissing the baby in his left arm. "And this one is Leo James, after my poppy." Ron closed his eyes. "I still don't know how I'm going to do this on my own."

"You're not going to be on your own," Kyle said. "You have your parents and Chaz's parents and all of their kids."

"And you have the rest of the Blackcreek pack," Dr. Havisham said.

Artie, who had come in after the incision was sewn up and glued, added gruffly, "You're going to be fine. I raised two kids on my own. You're tougher than you think you are when it's something that you have to do."

They wheeled Ron into one of the recovery rooms and moved him to the hospital bed.

"Why don't you hand one of those little ones over here," Artie said, holding out her arms. "I just love holding newborns."

"I'll step out for a little bit and get things cleaned up, if that's okay," Dr. Havisham said.

"I can help," Kyle said quickly, and took a step towards the door.

"You don't have to do that," Dr. Havisham said. "I know you want to spend time with the twins."

"I do, but there's something I need to talk to you about if you have a minute."

Artie looked up, "You shouldn't be making any decisions too hastily."

Kyle was confused for a moment. "I'm not."

Artie nodded, and Kyle followed Dr. Havisham back to the surgery and delivery table.

"What's going on, Kyle?" She asked. "Have you talked to your grandmother about what we discussed?"

"She doesn't like it. But that's not what I wanted to talk to you about."

Dr. Havisham raised an eyebrow. "All right, so what is it?"

"I just wanted to know if there's some kind of test you can do for secondary gender?"

Dr. Havisham blinked. "There's the blood test for late presenting teens. But usually the parents are the ones to ask about it."

"I've never heard of that test."

"It's fairly new. It takes a couple of days to show results. Did one of the cubs ask you about it?"

Kyle shook his head.
